A funny thing happened at work today. My boss called me at 4:45pm with what she said was a very important question. She asked me if American Idol was on tonight.
It may sound silly to the outsider, but to those who know what I went through with my last job, this was the most refreshing and reassuring phone call I’ve ever received. To have a boss who is friendly and warm and likes having me on her team, is such a great feeling. It really makes me feel like I made the right choice in my career and despite any temporary setbacks I might encounter due to lingering remnants of my last position, it’s all completely worth it. After the phone call I couldn’t stop smiling. I felt so ridiculous that my boss’ phone call about the schedule of American Idol could make me so happy. More than anything it showed me how unhappy I was before, and how taking that risk and trying something new, can often be so worth it.
Leaving my last role was a scary venture. I very well could have walked into a situation that was just as toxic, if not worse. But it was a risk I needed to take. And I’m so glad I did. People always ask me how the new project is going and I simply can’t say enough good things. Work is work, and that will never change. But the people here make it a great place. They’re happy, and supportive and understanding. On days that I work from home, I find myself wishing I was in the office just for the camaraderie that the environment fosters. It makes the day go by much quicker when you can smile while you work.
